The .SE country-code domain extension was launched in 1986 and delegated to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was very restrictive, so a very limited number of domain names were ordered. Persons were allowed to register no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was mandatory, i.e. merely Swedish individuals, firms and organizations were able to acquire a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened significantly and, as a result, the number of .SE domains has been rising each year.
